Inspect before final payment
A pre-purchase inspection is most useful before money changes hands. Ask the seller for permission, location, VIN, and enough time for a real look.
Visual red flags
Mismatched tires, uneven tire wear, wet leaks, coolant smell, smoke, fresh undercoating, warning lights, poor repairs, salvage clues, rust, and inconsistent panel gaps all deserve attention.

Readiness monitors, pending codes, stored codes, freeze-frame data, and recently cleared monitors can reveal history that a quick test drive may miss.
